The PS2 "sucks." That's the word.ss
 
Everyone who owns more than one system -- and especially a Dreamcast -- is thinking it. I've heard it on the Net, I've heard retailers say it, and I have heard people whose opinion I trust say the same thing. Sony said that the PS2 would be revolutionary and the Japanese launch showed us that the games are as good as Dreamcast games, or in some cases, worse. The current catch phrase, thanks to our own Collin Williamson, is "What a disappointment." (Followed by venting DC owners laughing like hyenas.)ss
 
As the Editor-in-Chief of IGNPSX and IGNPS2, that's hard to swallow. But you know what? The truth hurts. Some PS2 games suck (just like many Dreamcast games suck -- Godzilla Generations, anyone?), some are OK, and some are great. But many are definitely disappointing. The ones that are finished, anyway.ss
 
But Sony promised us a revolution.ss
 
Sony told us the Emotion Engine and the Graphics Synthesizer would turn the videogame industry on its ear. And even now, after having seen the games at E3, nothing except Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty was revolutionary. That's one game.

The catch phrase here, in case you haven't caught on, is that "Sony said..." Sony is trying to sell systems, raise its stock, and gain real estate in your brain. It's mindshare, guys. It wants you to believe it's going to crush the competition into a pulp. Most of us want to believe it. It's not quite like The Matrix, but it's not too far off, either.ss
 
The problem with Sony's amazing PR team isn't that it's done a bad job. In fact, it's done an amazing job. It's done such a great job that it's backfired. Yep, there's one thing you can't do, and that's trying to fool gamers. If you set them up, you had better deliver. Everyone who once believed in the PS2 ruling the world is now either angry or downhearted -- or, even worse, just plain bitter, because the games aren't revolutionary.ss
 
Right. So, what's a downhearted PlayStation2 fan to do? What's a system friendly gamer to do? The answer my friends, is to stop listening to Sony. Really. Stop buying the hype. Quit it. Sony's full of crap.ss
 
The key is is to be objective. Throw away all of those old thoughts of the PS2 being revolutionary. Throw away it cleaning Dreamcast's clock. Quit thinking that a new paradigm is going to happen. It ain't going to happen right away, folks. The upcoming launch will produce good games, but not revolutionary ones.ss
 
The PS2 is just a powerful 128-bit system, so is the Dreamcast. The PS2 is a machine. A good machine. And a machine that is only as good as the developers who program for it. The PS2 hasn't even come out yet.ss
 
Look at the games objectively, for what they are. Look at which games you want to play. Then decide what you want to believe.ss
