You may remember that I got myself a pretty 9800 Pro a couple of weeks ago. I then decided to replace the GF2 MX in the PC of my girlfriend by the one I had before in my PC, a Radeon 8500.
 
In my PC it worked absolutely without any trouble. The GF2 MX worked fine in her PC also.
 
Now that I have pu the 8500 in her PC, it won't work any more.
She has a *cough*Packard Bell*cough* computer which is not that bad ( Athlon XP 1600+ ).
 
If I use the 4.7 or 4.6 catalyst drivers, I can't even go past the XP loading screen. After it switches to the resolution I have set (1280x1024 on a 19" monitor), it goes black with some color pixels scattered there and everywhere.
 
What I don't understand is that I also have the same monitor and was using the same resolution on my PC without any trouble, but I had 2000, not XP.
 
I tried to install the 4.5 cats also. With those I can boot up, but eventually after like 20 minutes the VPU recover thing says the GPU has crashed and the display is switching to software and 16 bits.
 
I also tried to do a clean XP install (new HDD) and it's absolutely the same.
 
I have no clue of what I can do with that stuff .... Try alternate drivers ? (DNA, others ?) Some other ideas ?

I have the solution
I already have a radeon 8500 and i can say that is a problem from drivers. In fact my r8500 don't work with drivers after catalyst 4.2. That why the 4.7 don't work in the packard bell.  
I use catalyst 4.2 and it work perfectly

lestathecrowblahblah, I used this same card on my own PC with Windows 2000 and an ECS and then an ASUS motherboard. i was using the 4.6 cats without any trouble ... I tried the 4.5 but didn't try to get back to the 4.2 ones yet. Thanks for the advice anyway, I'll try this evening.

Ok I tried the 4.2 cats and it's the same, VPU recover if I launch a 3D app ... so it's something else

try the old 3.6 catalyst drivers

By the way, it may also be because your agp port on the packard bell doesnot deliver enough power for your card, in this case you may want to downclock your card a little to se if it works

I tried disabling AGP, disabling FastWrites. Even rtied very old (3.1) CATs. None of them work. Underclocking the core / ram screws the display totally.
 
I got here a screenshot of the CPUID and of the chipset information.
Apart from that, I checked and the PSU is a 215W one, maybe not enough power ?
 
What do you think ?

C'est claire et net si la carte marche sur un autre systéme c'est un manque d'alimentation.
Aujourd'hui en dessous de 350W c'est pas bien .

mais la 8500 n'est pas super gourmande en alim justement ... essaye d'effacer tout les drivers de manniere clean, et de réinstaller les catalyst 3.2 qd tu es en mode VGA biensur

voilà, essayé avec un systeme clean (just installé) + drivers VIA Hyperion + alim de 350W + AGP désactivé / activé / 1x 2x 4x - avec ou sans fastwrites - avec catalyst 3.1 3.9 4.2 4.6 4.7

Ouais je me posais aussi la question en voyant qu'on change de langue en plein milieu .
 
Le port AGP de la mobo est peut être un peu faible, ou ça peut surtout venir de l'alim (on peut faire confiance à PB pour ça)

la 8500 fonctionne PARFAITEMENT AVEC LES 4.7

ben en attendant comme je vous dit j'ai essayé une autre alim de 350.  parfois la carte tourne sans prob sur une démo 3d par ex (by ATI), parfois la meme démo génère un VPU recover

bah c'est un probleme d'incompatibilité entre la carte mere et la carte graphique alors, donc a par essayer de trouver un nouveau bios (se qui risque d'etre dur).
